Shocking

- extremely startling, frightening

Shocking is a scary, surprised tone. It is used in any horror film or story. It is the tone used is the monster jumps out. In writing, a shocking tone is usually near one or more exclaimation marks. During a shocking tone your pulse rate rises and you feel a little on edge.

If you want to see shocking tone, simply read in Stephen King book. All of his books contain extended periods that are very scary. They often contain phrases like, "the door opened slowly," and "strange sounds could be heard from down the hall." But the actually shocking part doesn't happen till the monster pops out and the victim starts running or is dead.
